Then read on with no help. The "hints" from that one sentence can unlock a lot of meaning from the rest of the page. I only look up a dictionary when I'm in the mood and when I do, I always use a monolingual one (漢字そのまま楽引辞典 for the NDS) even if I don't fully understand each and every word. Great post once again!

Since I found the books to be easy I had no problem following them. But with real Japanese like what I read in manga I don't see how I could not be using the dictionary on every page. Though I sometimes try the following rule: try to read the page. Then choose only one unknown word to look up in the dictionary and continue with the next page. It's a good compromise between not understanding anything and turning reading into just a huge session of dictionary lookups. I have the two volumes of the level 1 reader and I noticed those rules.
