Ah there’s a contradiction right there! You say you should have had more ‘fun’ by taking 12 months to complete the course whereas you obviously do not want to do so. So in that case, the 12 month option, by definition, isn’t ‘fun’ anymore (at least for you).

But you are not being realistic right there. Heisig’s book is said to have inspired an Indian woman to literally fall in love with learning kanji.

I guess what you’re basically trying to say is “Fun or no fun, follow the method to win”. Fine. I guess you expect happiness to just jump out of the corner when you suddenly realize that you’ve learned 3007 kanji, 43,892 new words and 213 sentence structures and hence reached fluency (whatever your own personal definition of fluency may be). It’s a long road but…keep truckin’!

If you look, his method says you should do RTK before learning any Japanese, and I’m down with that, but it was the absolute least fun I’ve ever had, I think. I did it super quick in two months, and according to his advice I shouldn’t have, I probably should have had more fun and taken 6 to 12 months.

So that is bollocks, rtk is not fun, for anyone, anywhere, let’s be realistic. It’s a lot of abstraction, repetition, etc. and boring as hell. However it was also one of the best things I did for Japanese.

Another example is the hard slog of going through KO in my srs. Again it sucks, it’s really hard and not very fun, but my vocabulary is excellent for the eight months I’ve been doing Japanese. I picked up a newspaper the other day, for the first time, and could read most of it, and understand the gist. I think that was worth it.
